Polly Grey Breaks Through

Mark Smith - Saturday March 27

The Chris Waller-trained Polly Grey finally broke her Australian duck at her eleventh start in her adopted homeland. Still, she chose the right spot to do it, the Group III Roadwork Solutions Epona Stakes (1900m) at Rosehill on Saturday.

Ridden by James McDonald, the 6yo daughter of Azamour came down the centre of the track to defeat Aliferous (Hinchinbrook) by a half-length with the same distance back to She's Ideal (Dundeel) in thirds.

A Listed stakes-winner in New Zealand when trained by Kylie Fawcett, Polly Grey advances her record to seven wins, five seconds and three thirds from 28 starts with earnings of $311,367.

"She’s had a bit of bad luck go against her, but finally, today was her day here in Australia,” Waller said.

“Hopefully, it’s not the last win; I think there’s a few more to come.

“These are her types of races, to be realistic. If we continue to get her into good form and she’ll take some confidence from that. Maybe a Doomben Cup.

“We’ll just keep poking away just below the top tier, and I’m sure the owners and connections and people following her will have a bit of fun.”

Polly Grey is the only foal of the 4-time winning Zenno Rob Roy mare Allanhah, a half-sister to Group 1 ARC Easter Hcp winner Pasta Post (Postponed) and the Group III Hawke's Bay Gold Cup winner Don Domingo (Don Eduardo).

A champion son of Night Shift, Azamour shuttled to Brighthill Farm for the 2013 season before his untimely death at Gilltown Stud in 2014.
