Donna Logan is leaning towards launching
Volkstok'n'barrell's spring racing carnival campaign in the Group I New Zealand
Bloodstock Memsie Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on August 29.
The gelding, who is part-owned by Victoria's Rosemont Stud, will step up his
preparations in a trial before the races at Ruakaka this Saturday.
Logan said his performance there will determine whether he resumes in the
Memsie or remains in New Zealand for the Gr.1 Makfi Stakes over 1400m on the
same day.
"It'll be good for him, but he's definitely going to need it," Logan said of
the trial.
"He's doing very well in himself, it's like he's been on holidays for too long,
but it's a nice pipe-opener for us and will tighten him up a bit before we
decide on the Memsie or Makfi.
"But we're leaning at this stage to the Memsie."
Volkstok'n'barrell showed his class when landing the Gr. 1 Rosehill Guineas
(2000m) during the Sydney autumn carnival, while he placed in both the Gr.1
Australian Derby and Gr.1 New Zealand Derby behind fellow Kiwi Mongolian Khan.
Logan said the son of Tavistock, who turns four on Saturday, had come back a
much more mature galloper.
"He's a lot more bullish in himself and his attitude. You'd almost think he was
a colt again.
"He's got quite 'bully' and he's more a grown up than he was. He was a young
boy when he travelled over last time, but he's turning into a young man now.
"I think he feels physically a lot stronger and he looks it. He seems a lot
more aggressive in himself and his work."
That development has Logan optimistic he might show something before his major
target, the A$3 million Gr.1 Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley.
"Obviously the Cox Plate on the 24th of October is our goal, but I think he'll
step up on the way through and we should see some good performances out of
him," she said.
Victorian rider Craig Williams partnered Volkstok'n'barrell in both runs in
Sydney during the autumn, but Logan said no jockey had been locked in for any
races this spring.
Also contesting Volkstok'n'barrell's trial at Ruakaka on Saturday will be
fellow Group One winner Mongolian Khan, Group Two winner Maygrove, Stephen
McKee's new stakes winning recruit Riding Shotgun, talented sprinter Ryan Mark
and the black type performer Satay.
The second heat will feature the Group One winners Turn Me Loose, Dal Cielo,
Puccini and In Style alongside the dual Listed winner and Group Placed mare
