First Australian Winner for Congrats

Mark Smith - Sunday May 17
The Richard Jolly-trained Sir Charleston opened his winning account at the second time of asking in an 1100 metre maiden at Gawler on Sunday to credit his sire Congrats (USA) with his first southern hemisphere-bred winner.

Third at Murray Bridge at his career debut, Sir Charleston was sent straight to the front by Paul Gatt from his inside barrier and was never troubled to run out a two lengths winner over Mail It In (Reset) with Ascendance (Choisir) three and a quarter length back in third.

Purchased by his trainer for $80,000 from the Westbury Stud draft at last year's NZ Bloodstock Premier Yearling sale, Sir Charleston,(pictured as a yearling) is the fifth foal of the 3-time Sydney winner Dancesteps.

A half-sister to Listed Geelong Classic winner Milestone (Redoute's Choice), Dancsteps is a daughter of the multiple Listed stakes-winner and Group 1 placed Cannyanna (Canny Lad).

A son of the champion AP Indy, Congrats became an instant sire sensation in America becoming the Champion Freshman Sire, Leading Second and Third Crop Sire.

He stood last season at Vinery Stud at a fee of $22,000 covering 92 mares, which will be reduced to $19,800 for the upcoming season.
