The
Listed Woodlands Stakes for juvenile fillies at Scone on Saturday provided a
dream result for Yarraman Park for a number of reasons, the most important being
the winner Flippant is the first stakes-winner for her Yarraman Park based sire
Hinchinbrook.
Prepared by Peter and Paul Snowden, Flippant (pictured Steve Hart) was backed into favouritism on the
strength of her good form in three previous starts which included a debut win
at Muswellbrook back in March.
Sent to the front by Hugh Bowman from a wide gate, Flippant relished the role
of leader, bowling along comfortably and kicking clear in the straight to win the
1100 metre dash by two and a quarter lengths.
"That was impressive," Bowman said. "In the blinkers first time she
bounced good, but didn't know what to do.
"I got her into stride and got her travelling and she did the rest.
"She felt just how she looked."
Finishing second was Fastnet Rock filly Harlem River, who was bred and sold by
Yarraman Park fetching $180,000 at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, while
in third place was I Am Invincible filly Miss Antaeus, who was bred and
retained to race by Yarraman, so the race was a great result all around for the
Mitchell family, who also part-own the winner.
Flippant has always been regarded highly and her next start will be in the Listed
BRC Lancaster Stakes (1200m) at Doomben on June 6.
"She's a big strong thing, built like a three-year-old and she's always
shown nice ability," said Peter Snowden.
"She's above average."
A $220,000 Magic Millions purchase for McKeever Bloodstock from the Bell River
Thoroughbreds draft, Flippant runs for a big syndicate that includes Yarraman
Park and has won two of four starts earning $108,210.
She's bred to good as the second winner from two to race for Lady Beckworth,
who is a winning half-sister by General Nediym to the dam of Group I stars
Atlantic Jewel and Commanding Jewel.
Closely related to Atlantic Jewel, who is by Hinchinbrook's sire Fastnet Rock,
Flippant was the most expensive filly from the first crop of Hinchinbrook, so it's
fitting to see her become his first stakes-winner.
Lady Beckworth was back at Yarraman Park last spring for a late covering to I
Am Invincible.
A three-quarter brother by Fastnet Rock to Snitzel, Hinchinbrook stands this
spring at a fee of $16,500 and has six entries for the Inglis Scone Yearling
Sale on Sunday. Click here to see them.
