The Gai Waterhouse-trained Driefontein looked a certain winner inside the 100 metres but Tommy Berry switched a rallying Weary back to the rails and the 5yo gelding edged out Driefontein with Lonhro gelding Territory back in third. (photo Steve Hart).
Waller said the purchase of a pony has settled Weary and turned his form around.
"I've never used a pony in my training career but he's worked the goods with this horse Waller said.
"He's nicknamed Dunlop, so it's Weary and Dunlop heading out to the track each morning and he has made him a racehorse. He does his work properly whereas last preparation I could not train him how I wanted to.
"He's given us a few headaches, I thought he was a genuine Epsom or even Cox Plate horse in the spring but he just didn't turn up," Waller said.
At his first prep, Weary won the Group III Doncaster Prelude and placed in the Group 1 Doncaster Mile and Group 1 All Aged Stakes.
A €16,000 yearling, Weary raced in England under the name of Sir Patrick Moore (FR). Trained by Harry Dunlop, he won at Newbury and Compiegne and finished second to Zenji (Hat Trick) in the Listed Prix Roland de Chambure at Longchamp.
The son of Eliza Park Stud's Danzig stallion Astronomer Royal (USA) also finished second behind the high-class Choisir colt Olympic Glory in the Greenham Stakes at Newbury.
A brother to the French Group III winner Stellar Path, Weary was resold at the Arqana Arc Horses In Training sale for €145,000 and races in the colours of Geoff and Mary Grimish.
French 2000 Guineas winner Astronomer Royal (USA) covered just 21 mares last season so he needs a big horse and Weary may well fit the bill.
