Studbook Release Interim Covering Statistics

The Keeper of the Australian Stud Book, Jacqueline Stewart has completed interim statistics on the 2014 Covering Season as at 26 January 2015.

Key Interim Statistics

§ Of the top 20 stallions by coverings, 18 were Australian-bred.

§ Coverings by Australian-bred stallions as a percentage of total Coverings have continued to increase, with 72% (367) Australian-bred stallions compared with 70% (437) in 2013 and 63% in 1994. Over ten years this is a 9% increase in Australian-bred stallions Coverings as a percentage of total Coverings.

§ 39 shuttle stallions covered 4,580 (24%) of the mares compared to 5,464 (23%)in 2013;

§ 230 (45%) stallions covered less than 10 mares compared to 305 (49%) in 2013 and 62% in 1994;

§ 25 (5%) stallions covered more than 150 mares compared to 23 (4%) in 2013 and 0 in 1994 (Danehill had the largest book in 1994 with 127 covers);

The combination of actual coverings recorded and the forecast coverings yet to be received from late lodgments reveal a decrease of 5% on the 2013 Covering Season.

The forecast for 2014 Covering Season is for 19,177 coverings by 563 stallions a decrease of 5% when compared to the 2013 Covering Season.

"I believe that although there will be a decrease in Coverings in the 2014 season it is a marginal decrease in the context of the current economic conditions and worldwide trends, " said Jacqueline Stewart – Keeper of the Australian Stud Book. 

"The Australian Breeding Industry is remarkably resilient and the rationalisation in the numbers of Stallions and Broodmares resulting in a decrease in Coverings is an economic reality not systematic of any inherent frailties in the Breeding Industry," Jacqueline Stewart concluded.
