Hot
on the heels of the retirement of this year's Epsom Derby winner Australia to
Coolmore comes the announcement that last year's winner Ruler of the World will
also join him on the roster next year.
Another outstanding son of champion sire Galileo, Ruler Of The World has been
retired from racing due to injury after finishing last in the .Group I British
Champions Stakes last weekend at Ascot.
"Ruler Of The World has a recurrence of the muscle injury in his hind quarters
that he suffered earlier in the summer and although it's not critical, we have
advised that he be retired to stud," said Ballydoyle vet John Halley.
Ruler Of The World won the Derby on just his third career start having earlier
landed a Curragh maiden and the Group III Chester Vase by 6 lengths.
Dropped back to a mile and a quarter for his final start of the season in the
Qipco Champion Stakes, the son of Galileo put in another excellent effort when
third, beaten just a neck and half a length, behind the older pair Farhh and
Cirrus des Aigles.
This season Ruler Of The World, now sporting the colours of Sheikh Joaan al
Thani's Al Shaqab Racing, made all the running under Frankie Dettori to land
the Group II Qatar Prix Foy at Longchamp.
"He's a very well-bred Derby winner by the best stallion in the world," said Coolmore's
David O'Loughlin. "Five different Epsom Derby winners have sired Group 1
winners in Europe this season headed by Galileo, High Chaparral and Sea The
Stars who have all enjoyed a great year both on the track and in the sales
ring. It's very exciting for Coolmore to be retiring two Derby-winning sons of
Galileo."
A half-brother to five-time Group I winner and sire Duke of Marmalade, Ruler of
the World retires with the record of four wins from 11 starts.
"Ruler Of The World is a lovely horse with a very good action," said trainer
Aidan O'Brien. "He did very well to win the Derby less than two months after
making his debut and he showed himself to be equally effective over a mile and
a quarter in last year's Champion Stakes."
A fee will be announced in due course.
